Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fibre being composed of many microscopic “fibrils” that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other disturbance processes. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to various dangerous lung conditions, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer.
Asbestos was frequently used as a building material in the UK between 1940 and 1999, although it was most common in materials made in the 60s, 70s and 80s. For this reason, any structure or product manufactured before the year 2000 (when the material was banned in the UK) has the potential to contain asbestos.
